Early life:
Suriya spent eight months working at a firm that exports clothing before beginning his career in filmmaking. He didn’t tell his supervisor he was Sivakumar’s son out of concern for nepotism, but in the end, his boss discovered the truth for himself. Vasanth initially offered him the lead role in his 1995 film Aasai, but he declined the position due to a lack of enthusiasm in pursuing an acting career. When he was 22 years old, he made his acting debut in Vasanth’s 1997 film Nerrukku Ner, which was also produced by Mani Ratnam. Ratnam gave him the stage name “Suriya” in order to prevent a name conflict with veteran actor Saravanan. Characters with the name “Suriya” appeared frequently in Ratnam’s films. He appeared in the movie alongside Vijay.
Film Career:

He appeared in the movie alongside Vijay, who would praise movie changed his career for the better. He got to recognition in Tamil cinema thanks to his performances as a police officer in Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Kaakha Kaakha and a con man in Bala’s Pithamagan. Suriya’s performances in both movies were lauded, earning him nominations for Best Actor at the 51st Filmfare Awards South for the former and Best Supporting Actor for Pithamagan. He played a college student and a hunchback in Perazhagan the next year. Again receiving plaudits for his portrayal, Suriya won his first Filmfare Best Actor honour. Additionally, he received praise for his role as a student leader in Mani Ratnam’s film.
Suriya appeared in three films in 2005: Maayavi, Ghajini, and Aaru. His portrayal of a businessman with anterograde amnesia in Ghajini received high appreciation and was financially lucrative. Maayavi and Aaru had a mediocre amount of success. Then, in 2008, Suriya had an appearance in Vaaranam Aayiram. He received another Filmfare Best Actor award for his dual roles as son and father. The three films Suriya made after that were Ayan (2009), Aadhavan (2009), and Singam (2010). The latter, in which he co-starred with Anushka Shetty, was his most highly profitable movie to that point and gave rise to the sequels Singam II (2013) and Si3 (2017). Suriya made his film debut in Telugu and Hindi in Ram Gopal Varma’s 2010 gangster movie Rakta Charitra.
In the 2011 film 7aum Arivu, Suriya portrayed Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk who founded Shaolin Kung Fu, and his mythical descendant Aravind. His solo film from 2012, Maattrraan, featured him playing conjoined twins.36 Vayadhinile, the debut movie from Suriya’s 2D Entertainment production business, was released in 2015.
In the 2016 science fiction hit 24 directed by Vikram Kumar, he played three characters for the first time. The Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor went to him for his work. He worked on the critically praised digital projects Soorarai Pottru (2020) and Jai Bhim (2021) after Thaana Serndha Koottam (2018) and Kaappaan (2019). Suriya received the National Film Award for Best Actor thanks to Soorarai Pottru.
