Then, with the use of photos from an instant camera and permanent tattoos on his body, he goes out to get revenge for her murder.
Soon after, in April, the movie’s production got underway, and it was finished by September of the same year. Two of the song sequences were filmed in Switzerland, while the rest of the movie was shot in Chennai. Allu Aravind dubbed it and released it in Telugu in November 2005. It was well welcomed by critics who praised the plot and the lead actors’ performances. In 2008, Murugadoss turned it into a Hindi movie of the same name, with Aamir Khan in the lead and Asin and Rawat reprising their roles—the former making his Bollywood debut. The plot of the movie is based on the 1951 movie Happy Go Lovely and the Christopher Nolan film Memento (2000).
Chitra, a medical student, is working on a study about the human brain with her pals. Chitra wishes to look into the odd case of Sanjay Ramaswamy, a well-known and wealthy businessman from Chennai who is said to suffer from anterograde amnesia. Since Sanjay’s records are the subject of a criminal investigation, her professor refuses to grant access. Curiosity overcomes her, and she secretly looks into the issue herself.
Every fifteen minutes, Sanjay loses his memory. He recovers after each cycle by using a system of notes, photos, and tattoos. It becomes clear that Sanjay is killing the accountable parties in order to exact revenge for the loss of his lover Kalpana. Sanjay’s primary target is Lakshman, a prominent socialite in Chennai and the leader of a people trafficking organization based in Kolkata. Investigating the serial killings, Inspector Ravi finds Sanjay at his apartment and renders him comatose. Ravi discovers two diaries, titled 2002 and 2003, in which Sanjay details his life’s events.
Sanjay Ramaswamy, the proprietor of the AirVoice mobile phone firm, meets Kalpana, a failing model, in 2002. He introduces himself as “Manohar” and secretly begins to feel romantic feelings for her. After a while, they spend time together and eventually grow fond of one another. Sanjay proposes to Kalpana near the end of the diary, vowing to reveal his identity as Sanjay Ramaswamy if she accepts.
Prior to Ravi reading the diary from 2003, Sanjay regains consciousness and restrains him. When Lakshman is the honored guest at a college function, he finds him. Sanjay decides to assassinate Lakshman after taking his picture. But in the parking lot, Sanjay murders one of Lakshman’s thugs by accident. Lakshman can’t remember the incident because he is confused. Sanjay is not one of his adversaries, but he makes the decision to track them out and murder them one by one. Chitra finds Ravi, battered and bound, at Sanjay’s apartment in the meantime. After discovering the two journals, Chitra releases Ravi. Having forgotten both of them, Sanjay shows up out of the blue and drives them away. Chitra just makes it out alive before a bus hits and kills Ravi.
Chitra tells Lakshman that Sanjay is pursuing him because she thinks he is in danger. When Sanjay learns that Chitra has forewarned Lakshman, he goes to her dorm to murder her. Chitra then phones the police, and Sanjay is detained but eventually released. After learning about Sanjay from a police investigation, Lakshman visits his apartment, destroys all of the notes and photos, and scratches off Sanjay’s tattoos. According to Kalpana’s 2003 diary, which Chitra reads, she accepted the proposal, but only after fulfilling her previous obligation. Sanjay’s departure on a business trip marks the sudden end of the diary. After more research, Chitra learns that Kalpana saved the lives of 25 defenseless young Tamil people as she was on her way to Mumbai for a modeling job.
The racket’s ringleader, Lakshman, killed two girls who knew him and then went looking for Kalpana. Sanjay trashed his thugs when they broke into her flat and attempted to kill her, but Lakshman assaults Sanjay and uses an iron rod to kill Kalpana. Chitra discovers Sanjay in the hospital and tells him the truth now that she knows the truth. She is instructed by Sanjay to guide him to Lakshman. To assist Lakshman in pursuing Sanjay, his twin brother Ram travels from Kolkata.
When Sanjay gets to Lakshman’s factory in downtown Chennai, he pursues him when he leaves in a car. However, everyone hears Chitra call Hin and say that he is here believing Ram to be Lakshman. She flees to her dorm room when Ram and his men attempt to kill her. When Ram and his goons show up with Lakshman, they threaten to kill her pals unless she brings Sanjay. She eventually locates Sanjay after searching for him with their goons. Sanjay rushes to the dorm to kill Lakshman after facing all of his goons. Although Sanjay defeats Lakshman and Ram, they severely beat and wound him.
However, he overpowers and murders the brothers when he remembers how Lakshman killed Kalpana and notices her presence. After getting his retribution, Sanjay and Chitra depart, pausing at a crossing to let small children to cross the street. He smiles back at a young girl who smiles at him.
