TheatreShivam Nair is the director and Ritesh Shah is the writer of the 2025 Indian Hindi-language political thriller The Diplomat. The movie, which stars John Abraham and Sadia Khateeb, explores topics of diplomacy and the emotional struggles experienced by diplomats against the backdrop of India-Pakistan ties.
Plot
Based on a true event, the movie centres on J. P. Singh, an Indian diplomat working at the Indian High Commission in Pakistan, whose life is turned upside down on May 5, 2017, when Uzma Ahmed arrives. A frightened refugee named Uzma claims to be an Indian citizen who was kidnapped and forced into marriage with Tahir, a Pakistani man of Pathan descent, in Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). She tells a terrifying story of being abused by Tahir, including being sexually and physically assaulted. Before being transported to a secluded area, Uzma, a mother of a girl with thalassaemia from a prior marriage, met Tahir in Pakistan and originally thought his motives were sincere.Tahir coordinated her entry into Pakistan without a police report or an immigration record, which casts doubt on her account.
The story starts in KPK, as Tahir and his brother Basheer accompany Uzma to the Indian Embassy. When the males go outside to smoke, Uzma seizes the opportunity to beg for assistance from the embassy employees, stating she is in danger. Singh questions Uzma to find out the truth because he was first dubious and thought she might be a terrorist or spy. Singh wrestles with the moral and ethical issues raised by Uzma’s story.
Singh interacts with Pakistani officials, such as Malik, the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and Faraz, the country’s Foreign Secretary, in an attempt to ensure Uzma’s safety. Pakistani officials are certain that Uzma is an Indian spy, claiming that she went to KPK to make contact with rebels and is now trying to return to India safely.
As Singh negotiates the Pakistani legal system, international political difficulties, and pressure from both the Indian and Pakistani governments, this accusation makes his mission more difficult. The film highlights the difficulties ambassadors encounter when their personal lives collide with geopolitical crises by examining the complex relationship between state activities and personal convictions, culminating in Singh’s resolute efforts to assist Uzma in crossing the Wagah Border to safety.
