Prashant Pillai, a well-known figure in the Tollywood music circle, has left an indelible mark as both a singer and music composer. His musical journey began after completing his Sound engineering in Chennai, where he had the opportunity to work with the renowned A.R. Rahman. Following a brief stint with Rahman, Pillai settled in Pune, focusing on scoring for ad jingles, web sonics, and short films.
A crucial influence in his career, A.R. Rahman, is regarded by Pillai as his professional guide and mentor. In the early stages of his career, around 2004, Pillai secured his first break by composing a radio jingle, paving the way for subsequent projects in both radio and television. The year 2007 marked a significant collaboration with Bejoy Nambiar on the critically acclaimed short film “Rahu”.
This project showcased Pillai’s collaboration with singer K. S. Krishnan and his proficiency in working with experimental sounds, resulting in a soundtrack he considers to be his best. Notably, the Rahu soundtrack featured Murtaza and Qadir Khan, sons of the Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.Pillai’s entry into feature films came in 2010 when Lijo Jose Pellissery roped him in for the Malayalam film “Nayakan”.
The film, featuring actors like Indrajith, Thilakan, Siddique, and Jagathy Sreekumar, marked a significant milestone in Pillai’s career. Academy Award winner A. R. Rahman released the music of the movie, solidifying Pillai’s presence in the industry. His breakthrough continued with the energetic Canteen song from the 2019 movie “Dear Comrade,” where he sang the Telugu version.
This success paved the way for his work on the crime thriller film “Ranarangam” in 2019, where he both composed and sang songs like “Kannu Kotti” and “Kummeyra.” Beyond movies, he collaborated with Manisha Eerabathini for Tollywood mash-up cover songs in 2016 and 2018. Collaborating once again with Bejoy Nambiar in 2011 for “City of God,” Pillai’s versatility expanded into commercial cinema with the Bollywood film “Shaitan”.
Directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by Anurag Kashyap, “Shaitan” presented a unique soundscape co-composed by eminent musicians like Ranjit Barot, Amar Mohile, and Anupam Roy. Concurrently in 2011, Pillai scored the original background music for the Malayalam film “Bombay March 12.” In 2012, Pillai worked on Siddarth Bharathan’s “Nidra” and provided background music for MTV Rush, a series directed by Bejoy Nambiar.
The following year saw the release of his third soundtrack for Bejoy Nambiar in the film “David,” featuring various bands and artists. Post “City of God,” Pillai continued his successful journey with the Malayalam musical film “Amen,” which became a blockbuster with a popular soundtrack. He further collaborated with Lijo Jose Pellissery on “Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal” and contributed to films like “Mosayile Kuthira Meenukal” and “Money Ratnam” in 2014.
In 2015, Pillai worked on four films, including his fourth collaboration with Lijo Jose Pellissery in “Double Barrel” and his debut Tamil film “Andhra Mess.” Prashant Pillai’s musical odyssey is characterized by a diverse range of projects, collaborations with acclaimed directors, and a unique soundscape that has resonated with audiences across languages.
