Theatre“Jigarthanda,” is a gripping 2014 Indian Tamil-language crime drama film, written and directed by the directed Karthik Subbaraj. Produced by S. Kathiresan’s Group, the film boasts a stellar cast featuring Siddharth, Bobby Simha, Lakshmi Menon, Karunakaran, and Guru Somasundaram. The musical genius Santhosh Narayanan composed both the songs and the background score, adding another layer of brilliance to the cinematic experience.
Inspired by the 2006 South Korean film “A Dirty Carnival,” “Jigarthanda” went on to become a cinematic gem, capturing audiences with its intense storytelling. The film’s success transcended language barriers, leading to remakes in Kannada as “Jigarthanda” (2016), in Telugu as “Gaddalakonda Ganesh” (2019), and in Hindi as “Bachchhan Paandey” (2022). Furthermore, a prequel titled “Jigarthanda DoubleX” was released in 2023, showcasing the enduring impact of the original narrative.
The story follows Karthik Subramani, an aspiring filmmaker participating in a talent search program. The judging panel comprises Mukil, a highbrow film director critical of Karthik’s work, and Sundar, a profit-oriented producer who recognizes Karthik’s talent. Despite Mukil’s elimination of Karthik, Sundar offers him a chance to direct a gangster film. Intrigued by the idea, Karthik sets out to explore the life of a notorious gangster named “Assault” Sethu in Madurai.
Karthik, assisted by his college friend Oorani, delves into Sethu’s world through meticulous surveillance. Fearing direct contact, they befriend Sethu’s henchmen and seek information from the local shopkeeper, “Petti Kadai” Pazhani, who has known Sethu since childhood. Their actions attract the suspicion of Sethu’s right-hand man, Rasu, leading to a series of events that eventually involve Karthik becoming an unwitting part of Sethu’s criminal activities.
In a surprising twist, Sethu discovers Karthik’s true intentions but is captivated by the idea of having his life portrayed on the big screen. Instead of punishing Karthik, Sethu welcomes him into his gang, allowing Karthik to document his criminal exploits. As the narrative unfolds, Karthik experiences a rollercoaster of emotions, from ecstatically documenting Sethu’s deeds to facing unexpected challenges.
The plot takes an unexpected turn when Karthik plans to leave Madurai, leading to a sequence of events where Sethu, feeling betrayed by Karthik, compels him to direct a gangster movie. To make matters more complex, Karthik subtly transforms the serious narrative into a comedy during post-production, turning Sethu’s menacing image into that of a crying character named A. Kumar, or Azhuguni (Crybaby) Kumar.
The film’s release creates waves of laughter among the audience, leaving Sethu fuming at the unexpected turn of events. However, as Sethu searches for Karthik, he begins to realize that earning respect through laughter is more meaningful than the fear he had instilled as a gangster. The film not only exposes Sethu’s vulnerability but also prompts introspection on the true nature of respect and admiration.
In a final confrontation, Karthik and Sethu cross paths again, leading to a dramatic resolution where Sethu pardons Karthik. Choosing to let go of his criminal past, Sethu and Karthik find new paths in the movie industry, illustrating the transformative power of storytelling.
“Jigarthanda” stands as a testament to Karthik Subbaraj’s storytelling prowess, blending crime, drama, and comedy seamlessly. The film’s exploration of the filmmaking process within a crime narrative adds depth to the storyline, making it a memorable cinematic experience for audiences across languages.
