Indian director Hansal Mehta was born on April 29, 1968. Beginning with the television series Khana Khazana (1993–2000), he went on to direct movies such as Woodstock Villa (2008), Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai? (2002), and Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2000). Shahid (2013), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Direction, garnered him praise from critics. He was nominated for a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film for Faraaz (2023). He directed the television series Scam 1992 (2020), for which he won the Filmfare OTT Award for best director and Scoop (2023), which won the Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Award for best Asian television series.
Mehta began his career in 1993 as a director of the television cooking program Khana Khazana, which launched superstar chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s Zed TV career. In addition, Mehta directed a number of television shows, including Highway (1995), Yaadein (1995), Amrita (1994), Lakshya (1998), Neeti (1998), and numerous others.
In the Indian Panorama 1999–2000 at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Hyderabad, he directed his first feature film, Jayate. A melancholy migration story based in Mumbai, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2000), came after this. Despite its lackluster box office performance, this movie nonetheless has a devoted audience because of its dark humor and examination of life on the outskirts of Mumbai. Later same year, he produced the stylized gangster movie Chhal (2002), which was more well-received than his earlier works. He acknowledged that the movies he made after Chhal were unimpressive, and he went through a period in which he dabbled in clichéd popular themes.
His contribution to Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) was a short film called High on the Highway, which was essentially a re-telling of a 1995 television short he directed, Highway, which was based on a Vishal Bhardwaj script. Following the release of Woodstock Villa in 2008, he took a long hiatus to study topics that were important to him and to explore life as a gourmand and entrepreneur.
The 2013 film Shahid, which starred Rajkummar Rao, was Mehta’s big break. Shahid had a lengthy run at numerous international film festivals across the world after having its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Later, this movie was purchased by Disney-UTV, and in October 2013, it was distributed commercially. a movie that tells the story of Shahid Azmi, a human rights attorney who was killed in 2010.[6, 7] This movie, which has received great reviews on Netflix and Amazon Prime, keeps bringing attention to human rights issues and the Indian legal system.
