Ambika, an Indian actress, is widely recognized for her extensive work in the southern film industry and various television serials. She has also appeared in an English film with Indian-American roots. From 1976 to 1989, Ambika held a prominent position as one of the top heroines in South Indian cinema. Her younger sister, Radha, also pursued a career in acting, and together they starred in several South Indian films during the peak of their careers. The siblings jointly manage ‘ARS Studios,’ which was transformed into a hotel complex in 2013.
Born to Kallara Kunjan Nair and Sarasamma in Kallara, Thiruvananthapuram, Ambika has a family background with political involvement, as her mother, Kallara Sarasamma, was a Mahila Congress leader in 2014. Ambika has two younger sisters, Radha and Mallika, along with two younger brothers, Arjun and Suresh.
Ambika’s personal life includes a marriage to NRI Premkumar Menon in 1988, resulting in two sons, and subsequent divorce in 1996. She remarried actor Ravikanth in 2000, but this marriage also ended in divorce in 2002. Currently, Ambika resides in Chennai with her sons.
Her journey in the entertainment industry began as a child artist in Malayalam cinema in 1976 with the film “Chottanikkara Amma.” Transitioning to a leading role, she starred as a heroine in over 200 South Indian films. Ambika’s debut in Tamil cinema was in 1979 with “Chakkalathi,” and she gained attention for her role as a young girl in K Bhagyaraj’s Tamil film “Andha 7 Naatkal” in 1984. Notably, she achieved fame with “Kaakki Sattai” (1985) and starred alongside her sister Radha in “Kadhal Parisu” (1987), showcasing their acting prowess.
In 1986, Ambika played a pivotal role in the commercially successful Malayalam movie “Rajavinte Makan,” where she was paid more than the acclaimed actor Mohanlal. The 1980s marked the golden era of Ambika’s career, with over 200 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada, collaborating with leading actors of that time.
After her divorce, Ambika returned to India in 1997 and resumed her acting career with films like “Periya Manushan” and “Simhada Mari.” She also appeared in Vikraman’s project “Mariyadhai” (2009) and took on various roles in television, including the lead role in the serial ‘Mrs. Hitler’ on Zee Tamil TV and a special appearance in ‘Anbe Vaa’ on Sun TV.
In addition to her acting career, Ambika is involved in designing and has worked in many advertisements. She has also served as a judge in numerous reality shows. Ambika continues to contribute to the entertainment industry, demonstrating her versatility in acting and other creative pursuits.
