Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala, an acclaimed Indian actress and politician, gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic 1987 television series Ramayan. Her impressive career encompasses diverse roles, including her debut film Sun Meri Laila (1983), where she starred opposite Raj Kiran, and three Hindi films alongside Rajesh Khanna: Rupaye Dus Karod, Ghar Ka Chiraag, and Khudai.
Beyond Hindi cinema, Chikhlia ventured into regional films, making her mark in Malayalam with Ithile Iniyum Varu (1986), alongside Mammootty, and in Kannada with Hosa Jeevana (1990) alongside Shankar Nag and Indrajith (1989) with Ambareesh. She also tasted success in Tamil with Nangal (1992), alongside Prabhu, and in Bengali with Asha O Bhalobasha (1989), opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee.
Her acting journey began with Sun Meri Laila (1983), marking her debut as a lead actress opposite Raj Kiran. Chikhlia made her presence felt in the television serial Dada Daadi Ki Kahani in 1985. She took on supporting roles in hit films like Bhagwan Dada (1986), Kala Dhanda Goray Log (1986), and Doorie (1989). She played the lead in the horror film Cheekh (1986) and Raat Ke Andhere Mein (1987).
The pivotal moment in her career arrived in 1987 when she portrayed the iconic character of Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. This role catapulted her to immense popularity. Before Ramayan, she was part of Ramanand Sagar’s Vikram Aur Betaal. Subsequently, she continued to secure lead roles in successful TV serials like The Sword of Tipu Sultan and Luv Kush (both in 1989).
Her notable Hindi film successes included Ghar Ka Chiraag (1989) and Rupaye Dus Karod (1991), both featuring Rajesh Khanna. However, Khudai in 1994, where she had more significant screen time, turned out to be a commercial failure. Chikhlia extended her reach to various regional cinemas, with successful films such as the Kannada hit in 1990, where she starred opposite Shankar Nag, and Bengali films like Asha O Bhalobasha (1989) with Prosenjit Chatterjee and Tamil film Naangal (1992) with Prabhu.
Chikhlia, not confining herself to acting, appeared in the TV serial Chutta Chheda (2017) on Colors Gujarati channel. She took on the role of producer in August 2023 with the TV show Dhartiputra Nandini. Additionally, she graced the Gujarati film Nattsamrat, released in August 2018, and worked on her Hindi movie Gaalib (2018-2019). She made a notable appearance in the movie Bala (November 2019) as Pari’s (Yami Gautam) mother.
Beyond the realms of entertainment, Chikhlia embraced a political career, becoming a Member of Parliament in the Indian Lok Sabha from the Baroda constituency in 1991 as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. In her personal life, she married Hemant Topiwala on 23 November 1991, the owner of Shingar Bindi and Tips and Toes cosmetics. In later years, her prominence in Hindi films diminished, with limited success after 1992.
Sanam Aap Ki Khatir (1992), where she played the main lead heroine, flopped, leading to supporting roles in subsequent Hindi films. The couple has two daughters, Nidhi Topiwala and Juhi Topiwala. In August 2023, Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala took on the role of a producer for the TV show Dhartiputra Nandini, marking a new chapter in her multifaceted career.
