Story:

“Bigil” is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language sports action drama directed by Atlee and produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram. Starring Vijay as Michael Rayyapan, a former footballer-turned-gangster, the film narrates how he transforms to coach a women’s football team after their coach is attacked. It marked the third collaboration between Vijay and Atlee and was known initially as “Thalapathy 63.” Filming took place in Chennai and Delhi, concluding in August 2019. The film’s title, “Bigil,” was revealed in June 2019 along with the first look poster. The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, and the film gained praise for Vijay’s performance, action scenes, and its social message.

Michael Rayappan, a gangster from Chennai’s Royapuram area, aids his slum while having a humorous connection with Angel Aasirvatham and a rivalry with gangster Daniel. After a violent attack, Kathir, coach of the Tamil Nadu women’s football team, becomes paralyzed, prompting him to request that Michael, his former teammate, take over. The story is interspersed with flashbacks revealing that Michael had been an aspiring footballer supported by his father, Rayappan. However, after Rayappan’s death, Michael takes on his criminal mantle. He reluctantly agrees to coach the women’s team, initially met with resistance due to his background. But he eventually trains and motivates them to success.

The team faces various obstacles, including sabotage attempts, drug-related incidents, and personal struggles. Michael’s determination and leadership guide them through these challenges. The climax arrives with a rematch against Manipur in the national championship final. Despite attempts to hinder them, the team wins through a penalty shootout, dedicating their victory to Kathir. Michael exposes the corrupt Sharma, leading to his arrest and later execution. The film ends with Michael coaching children, including Daniel’s son, who has reconciled with him, symbolizing a hopeful future.
