After completing his degree in Visual Communications at Loyola College Chennai, Ruben approached director Gautham Menon with hopes of becoming an assistant. Instead, Gautham Menon directed him to work with renowned film editor Anthony as an assistant editor. Under Anthony’s guidance, Ruben gained experience working on various film productions, including Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010). Eventually, Ruben got the opportunity to edit film trailers and worked on projects like Thoranai (2009), Avan Ivan (2011), and Vedi (2011).
His big break as a full-fledged editor came with the film Kandaen (2011), and he received praise for his exceptional work, especially for the “Oru Murai” song in Elred Kumar’s Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal (2012). However, it was the commercially successful film Raja Rani (2013) that truly propelled his career forward, leading him to handle more high-budget projects. He was acclaimed for his editing of the song “Oday Oday” in the film and was instrumental in persuading the team not to shoot the “Angyaade” song in Japan to save costs. To avoid confusion with the editor Anthony, he adopted the name Ruben for all his future projects.
