Sujatha Mohan, widely known as Sujatha, is a highly acclaimed Indian playback singer celebrated for her contributions to Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Badaga, Hindi, Marathi, and other language films. Born into a distinguished family, she is the granddaughter of Paravoor T. K. Narayana Pillai, the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile State of Travancore–Cochin after India gained Independence.
Sujatha’s illustrious career began in the seventies when, as Baby Sujatha, she frequently performed with K. J. Yesudas in stage shows worldwide. Her debut song, “Kannezhuthy Pottuthottu,” was recorded in the sixth standard for the 1975 Malayalam movie “Tourist Bungalow.” Notable non-film songs, including the hit “Odakkuzhal Vili,” further established her reputation.
In Tamil, her debut song “Kaadhal Oviyam Kandein” from “Kavikuyil” (1977) marked the beginning of her success. She took a brief hiatus after marriage in 1981 but made a triumphant comeback in 1988 with “Kadathanadan Ambadi” and the blockbuster “Chithram.”
Sujatha gained widespread recognition for her collaboration with A. R. Rahman, starting with the hit song “Pudhu Vellai Mazhai” from “Roja” (1992). She contributed to several successful Rahman compositions in Tamil and Hindi, including “Ishq Bina” from “Taal” and “Hai Jaana” from “Pukar.” Her husky voice and versatile singing style have garnered her a massive fan base.
As a judge on popular music shows such as Munch Star Singer Junior, IDEA Star Singer, and AIRTEL Super Singer (Vijay TV), Sujatha has shared her expertise and mentored budding talents. With a discography spanning more than 10,000 songs as of 2021, Sujatha Mohan continues to be a respected and influential figure in the Indian music industry.
