Sriranjani is widely recognized for her poignant performances in tragic roles across Tamil and Telugu cinema. Born in the village of Murikipudi in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, her cinematic journey began in 1944 when director C. Narayana Murthy provided her with a breakthrough role in the film “Bhishma,” where she portrayed the character of Satyavathya.
However, it was her compelling depiction of Gunasundari in the 1949 film “Gunasundari Katha” that truly catapulted her to fame. Known for her versatility, Sriranjani took on diverse roles in films such as “Gollabham,” “Brahmachari,” “Gitanjali,” “Madhalasa,” and “Laila Majnu.” Her portrayal of the virtuous character Kalyani in the iconic film “Parasakthi” (1952) added to her acclaim.
This film marked the debut of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan, and the script was penned by Sri M Karunanidhi. Sriranjani continued to impress audiences with her acting prowess, earning accolades for her role as Raji, a blind woman, in the movie “Raji En Kanmani.” Her versatility shone through as she also took on the role of the leading lady in the magnum opus “Chandraharam,” a film directed by Kamalakara Kameswara Rao and starring N.T Rama Rao.
In 1960, Sriranjani played a supporting role in the film “Mahakavi Kalidas,” where she shared the screen with actor Akkineni Rao. By 1970, she had accumulated an impressive filmography, having appeared in over 40 films, contributing significantly to both the Telugu and Tamil film industries.
