Express is a 2021 Indian Telugu-language sports drama film directed by Dennis Jeevan Kanukolanu, featuring Sundeep Kishan and Lavanya Tripathi in lead roles, with Murali Sharma and Rao Ramesh in supporting characters. Serving as a remake of the 2019 Tamil film Natpe Thunai, the narrative delves into the prevalent issues of corruption and nepotism within the realm of sports, with the film hitting theaters on March 5, 2021.
Sanju Naidu, portrayed as a carefree young individual in Yanam, aspires to relocate to France. However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he falls in love with Lavanya Rao, a hockey player trained by the benevolent retired military man and Indian local hockey team coach, Murali. The plot thickens as a corporate entity sets its sights on the hockey ground used by Murali’s players, assisted by the Sports Minister Rao Ramesh.
An RTI filed by Murali reveals the corporation’s nefarious plan to construct a factory that poses environmental threats to the nearby rivers and the villagers. To thwart this, Murali devises a plan involving a crucial hockey match against the Vizag team. In the process of forming his hockey team, Murali discovers that Sanju, the protagonist, was the captain of the 2014 U-21 World Cup Indian hockey team but faced a three-year ban.
Sanju initially declines to join the team, sharing his reasons for leaving hockey and recounting a tragic incident involving his friends Darshi and Rahul. Sanju’s childhood friends, Darshi and Rahul, play pivotal roles in his past. Darshi, a rejected hockey aspirant, succumbs to grief by taking his own life, and Rahul loses a leg while attempting to save Darshi from an oncoming train.
This sequence of events results in Sanju’s ban from hockey for five years. Murali, determined to resist the corporate intrusion, rallies his students and the local community in protest. However, the Sports Minister employs underhanded tactics to impede Murali’s success in his efforts. The minister forms an alliance with Sanju’s former coach to hinder Sanju’s team from winning the hockey tournament.
Moved by the plight of local hockey players, especially in the face of adversity, Sanju decides to join the hockey team and reclaim the threatened ground. Murali and Sanju undergo rigorous training sessions, overcoming numerous challenges in preparation for the crucial match. Despite facing significant hurdles, Murali’s team emerges victorious in the hockey match, successfully reclaiming their ground.
The hard-fought victory symbolizes the resilience of the players and their triumph over the corrupt forces that sought to exploit their sporting space. Returning to the ground, the team witnesses Rao Ramesh, now stripped of his position, expressing joy for Murali’s team’s triumph in a press speech. The once-powerful minister experiences a downfall, while Murali and his team revel in the well-deserved victory.
Express, with its gripping narrative and themes of sports, corruption, and redemption, offers a compelling cinematic experience. The film’s journey from personal struggles to collective victory paints a poignant picture of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
