Selvaraghavan and his sisters hailed from a family with a background in the movie business. Despite this, their parents encouraged them to pursue higher education. Selvaraghavan followed their advice and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Though he didn’t excel academically and knew he wouldn’t become a top mechanical engineer, he had a passion for scriptwriting. After graduating in 1997, he attempted to secure funding from producers for his scripts but faced failure. As a recent graduate with no job prospects, he spent much of his time at home. In the early 2000s, Selvaraghavan’s family invested in his project titled “Thulluvadho Ilamai” due to financial difficulties caused by his father’s unemployment.
“Thulluvadho Ilamai” depicted the coming-of-age stories of six high school students and featured a hit soundtrack by Yuvan Shankar Raja, with Sherin and Abhinay’s brother Dhanush making his acting debut. Initially slow to gain traction, the film eventually attracted large audiences due to its portrayal of teenage experiences and was controversially promoted as a “soft porn” movie in some regions. While Selvaraghavan claimed to have directed the film, he had to credit his more renowned father, Kasthuri Raja, as the official director to secure a distributor. Despite this, the movie surprised everyone by becoming a hit and was lauded for breaking stereotypes associated with Tamil cinema.
The success of “Thulluvadho Ilamai” allowed Selvaraghavan to pay off his debts. His next venture, the love story “7G Rainbow Colony,” also proved to be a commercial success. Although his first two movies performed well at the box office, his gangster film “Puthupettai,” released in 2006, initially received little attention. However, Selvaraghavan’s breakthrough role in the action movie “Aayirathil Oruvan,” co-starring Karthi, Reema Sen, and Andrea Jeremiah, contributed significantly to his rapid rise to fame.
Known for basing his movies on real-life situations, Selvaraghavan has earned a reputation as one of the finest directors in Tamil cinema. His films receive praise from both critics and audiences due to their creative and innovative storytelling. “Beast,” released in 2022 and featuring Selvaraghavan alongside Vijay, marked his first movie appearance. Additionally, in “Saani Kaayidham,” he played the lead role alongside Keerthy Suresh.
