Sukumari was born to Malayali parents Madhavan Nair, a bank manager, and Sathyabhama Amma of Tharishuthala Valia Veedu in Kalkulam (in the present-day Kanyakumari District), on October 6, 1940 in Nagercoil, Travancore (now in Tamil Nadu). Sathyabhama Amma was the niece of Narayani Pillai Kunjamma, a well-known beauty who chose to wed the affluent landowner Kesava Pillai of Kandamath rather than the king. She is linked to the Travancore Royal Family through her cousin, Ambika Sukumaran.
She attended Poojappura LP School up until the second grade before moving to Madras to finish her education. She had one brother, Shankar, and four sisters (Rajakumari, Sreekumari, Jayasree, and Girija). She was related to the Travancore Sisters, Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini.
When Sukumari and Padmini visited a movie set, the director took notice. Sukumari went on to make her acting debut as the lead in the Tamil film Or Iravu.She appeared in several black-and-white Malayalam and Tamil movies, including P. Venu’s Udhyogastha, Chettathi, Kusruthikkuttan, Kunjali Marakkar, Thacholi Othenan, Yakshi, and Karinizhal. After appearing in several Priyadarshan films, including Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Oodarathuammava Aalariyam, Boeing Boeing, and Vandanam, she later rose to fame.
Additionally, she made appearances in a number of Balachandra Menon-directed movies, including Manicheppu Thurannappol and Karyam Nissaram. She later had a significant part in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s 2002 film Nizhalkuthu. She had a number of noteworthy mother roles.
She was proficient in several musical instruments as well as dance styles like Kathak, Bharathanatyam, and Kerala Natanam. She began performing at the age of seven, traveling to the USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Ceylon, Australia, and other countries. Sukumari is also well-known for her early stage career, particularly for her work with Cho Ramaswamy’s theater company, Viveka Fine Arts (more than 5000 stage performances). For many years, Padmini’s autonomous dance theater company, Premanand Pictures (several stage productions), etc.
She spent many years performing on stage with groups like the Travancore Sisters’ Dancers of India troupe, T. D. Kusalakumari’s troupe, United Amateur Artists (more than 1000 stage performances), Rajasulochana’s dance troupe, Pushpanjali (more than 5000 stage performances), and Padmini’s independent dance drama troupe, Premanand Pictures (many stage performances), among others. In Sukumari’s honor, awards in the form of the “Vanita Ratnam Award” for acting have been established. “Mikacha Nadi Sukumari Puraskaram” by ACTA annakkara, “Sukumari Smaraka Foundation Award” by True Indian Information and Guidance Society, and “Famea Sukumari Puraskaram” are examples of such publications.
