Vanitha Krishnachandran, an accomplished Indian film and television actress, made her mark during the 1980s by featuring in nearly 170 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu cinema, in addition to numerous Malayalam and Tamil television serials. Born in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, to Ganeshan and Kamala, she is the youngest of four siblings.
Her father, originally from Manjeri, Kerala, has ancestral roots in Tamil Nadu, while her mother hails from Tiruchirappalli. Originally named Sai Vanitha due to her parents’ devotion to the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba, she has two elder sisters, Sai Prashanthi and Sai Jayalakshmi, and an elder brother, Sai Ram. Vanitha received her primary education at RSK Higher Secondary School in Tiruchirappalli but discontinued studies after the tenth grade, delving into the world of movies.
Vanitha tied the knot with Malayalam actor and singer Krishnachandran on May 11, 1986, with whom she had shared the screen in films like Eenadu, Vanithapolice, Belt Mathai, and Deeparadhana. She embarked on her film career at the age of 13, debuting in the 1979 film Padai Maarinal directed by national award-winning director Durai.
Her first Malayalam film, Chandrabimbam, marked the beginning of her popularity among Malayali audiences. She played lead roles in films like Eenadu, Kaikeyi, and Enickum Oru Divasum, acting alongside acclaimed actors like Mammooty and Mohanlal in Vikatakavi and Chakravalam Chuvannappol, respectively.
Vanitha, known for her versatile roles, worked tirelessly across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films, slowing down after her marriage to Krishnachandran. Her 100th film, Kalyana Agathigal, was her last before marriage.
In 2001, Vanitha made a notable comeback in Tamil with a negative role in K. Balachander’s television serial Kaalmulaitha Aasai. She continued to showcase her talent in Tamil serials like Alaigal and Kolangal, as well as in Malayalam.
Portraying Jalaja teacher in K. K. Rajeev’s serial Amma Manasu, she considers it a significant break in her second innings. Additionally, she took on maternal roles in Tamil films like Kana Kandaen, Kalabha Kadhalan, and Parijatham, as well as in several Malayalam films.
