K. Vishwanath, fondly known as “Kalatapasvi,” was an eminent Indian film director, screenwriter, lyricist, and actor, born on February 19, 1930, in Repalle, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. With a career spanning six decades, he directed 53 feature films, earning the title of one of Telugu cinema’s greatest auteurs. His unique blend of parallel cinema with mainstream elements garnered international recognition. In 1981, he received the “Prize of the Public” at the “Besançon Film Festival of France.”
Viswanath’s contribution to the arts earned him the Andhra Pradesh state Raghupathi Venkaiah Award in 1992 and the prestigious Padma Shri. In 2017, he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest accolade in Indian cinema.
His filmography, addressing diverse themes such as performing arts, visual arts, aesthetics, melodrama, and poetry, is lauded for tackling societal issues like caste, color, disability, gender discrimination, misogyny, alcoholism, and socio-economic challenges through the medium of liberal arts.
Notable classics like “Sankarabharanam” (1980) and “Sagara Sangamam” (1983) achieved acclaim, listed among CNN-IBN’s 100 greatest Indian films. His films “Sankarabharanam” and “Saptapadi” (1981) received National Film Awards. “Swathi Muthyam” (1986) was India’s official entry to the 59th Academy Awards.
Viswanath’s impact extended beyond cinema, promoting inclusivity and positive spiritual change. His films, such as “Sarada” (1973) and “Swathi Muthyam” (1986), explored characters facing mental and physical challenges. Murthy, a film researcher, highlighted Viswanath’s role in contributing to the revival of Carnatic music through “Sankarabharanam” and noted the inclusive nature of his films, fostering positive changes at personal and social levels.
