Karunanidhi Sethu

Biography:

Karunas, originally named Karunanidhi Sethu, is a multifaceted Indian figure known for his roles as an actor, comedian, and politician in the Tamil film industry. While he mainly appeared in supporting roles, he also took on lead roles in films such as “Dindigul Sarathy” (2008) and “Ambasamudram Ambani” (2008). Beyond acting, Karunas explored other aspects of filmmaking, including producing, composing music, and singing. He also holds the position of Vice-President in the Nadigar Sangam since his election in 2015.

Born in Kuruvikkarambai, Tamil Nadu, Karunas began as a pop singer and dancer, specializing in Tamil folk music. He transitioned into the film industry as a comedian and eventually gained recognition for his acting skills. Notably, director Bala discovered him and cast him in the successful film “Nandha” (2001), which marked his acting debut. He then appeared in various films in supporting comedy roles, such as “Baba” (2002), “Pithamagan” (2003), and “Polladhavan” (2007). In addition to acting, Karunas ventured into film distribution with mixed success.

He later stepped into lead roles with “Dindigul Sarathy” (2008), followed by other comedies like “Ambasamudram Ambani” (2010) and “Chandhamama” (2013). Karunas also showed versatility in serious performances, including “Ceylon” (2014), a war drama directed by Santosh Sivan. He temporarily halted taking lead roles in 2015 but returned with supporting roles, earning praise for his work in films like “Darling” (2015) and “Komban” (2015). His noteworthy performance came in “Azhagu Kutti Chellam” (2016). He later made a comeback as a lead actor, including in the successful film “Soorarai Pottru” (2020).

Beyond his film career, Karunas is active in politics and was associated with the Mukkulathor Pulipadai, a Thevar political group. He won the Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly election in 2016 from Thiruvadanai constituency as an AIADMK candidate. His political involvement led to incidents such as an attempted attack on him due to his support for AIADMK leader V. K. Sasikala. Karunas is married to Grace, a playback singer, and they have two children, including a son named Ken Karunas, who is also a part of the film industry.
