“Thuppakki” is a 2012 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film directed by AR Murugadoss. Produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu, the movie stars Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal, with supporting roles played by Sathyan, Vidyut Jammwal, Jayaram, Manobala, and Zakir Hussain. The story follows Jagadish, an intelligence officer in the Indian Army, as he attempts to dismantle a sleeper cell responsible for a bomb blast.
The collaboration between Vijay and Murugadoss was confirmed in 2011, and the film’s title was revealed later that year. Shooting occurred between January and October 2012, with locations including Mumbai, Bangkok, and Switzerland. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Harris Jayaraj, while Santosh Sivan handled cinematography and A. Sreekar Prasad managed editing.
Released on Diwali day in 2012, the film faced controversies and protests from certain groups. However, it garnered positive reviews and earned over ₹100 crore within ten days. Although it received several Filmfare Awards South nominations, it didn’t secure any wins. The film was remade in Hindi and Bengali and was dubbed in other languages.
The plot revolves around Jagadish, an army officer, who falls in love with Nisha, a modern-minded boxer. Jagadish thwarts a series of attacks planned by a sleeper cell and rescues his sister when the cell targets his loved ones. Ultimately, he confronts and defeats the leader of the sleeper cell, as well as a traitor within the Indian Defense.
