Pinky Sarkar, known by her stage name Meenakshi and born on August 6, 1982, is an Indian actress who is prominent in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. She gained notable recognition for her portrayal of Raasathi in her debut film “Karuppusamy Kuththagaithaarar.”
Meenakshi initially appeared in two Telugu films: the historical fiction “Hanumanthu” and the devotional movie “Sri Satyanarayana Swamy,” using her birth name Pinky Sarkar. In the latter, she portrayed goddess Lakshmi, but her performance was criticized for lacking emotional depth.
Her breakthrough in the Tamil film industry came in 2007 with “Karuppusamy Kuththagaithaarar,” where she played the role of Raasathi, a first-year medical student. This performance left a strong impression and led to her being offered similar girl-next-door characters. However, in an effort to avoid typecasting, she turned down those roles, took a hiatus from acting, and focused on completing her education before returning to Chennai.
In 2009, she appeared in her next Tamil film, “TN 07 AL 4777,” a remake of the Hindi movie “Taxi No. 9211.” Here, she played the character Pooja, a wealthy and outgoing cosmopolitan girl, which prompted her to undergo a fashion makeover. The same year, she starred in two more Tamil films, “Perumal” by Sundar C. and “Rajadhi Raja” by Raghava Lawrence. She also made a cameo appearance in Vishal’s “Thoranai.” Unfortunately, all these films turned out to be box office failures. The following year, she featured in Karu Pazhaniappan’s “Mandhira Punnagai” and “Agam Puram.” She took a break from acting for over three years during this period to pursue an MBA and care for her ailing father.
In 2014, Meenakshi made a comeback by taking on a lead role in “Villangam” and a supporting role in Vetrimaaran’s “Soodhadi.” She also agreed to perform in a special song for Ezhil’s “Vellaikaara Durai.”
