Zakir Hussain is an Indian actor known for his roles in Hindi films, particularly in negative and comedic characters. He gained recognition through performances such as Rashid in the 2005 movie “Sarkar” directed by Ramgopal Varma, Shardul in Sriram Raghavan’s 2007 film “Johnny Gaddaar,” and Prakash Rao in Rohit Shetty’s “Singham Returns.”
Born and raised in Jani Khurd, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Zakir Hussain developed an interest in theater and cinema while studying in Delhi. He began his journey with small theater productions, eventually joining the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. He further honed his skills at the prestigious National School of Drama, graduating in 1993.
Transitioning to Mumbai, Zakir Hussain ventured into television and films after establishing himself in serials like “Firdaus,” “Kitty Party,” and “Gaatha.” His entry into films began with a minor role in Sriram Raghavan’s 2004 movie “Ek Hasina Thi.” Although his part was brief, director Ramgopal Varma was impressed, subsequently casting him as Rashid in “Sarkar.” This portrayal of a ruthless antagonist garnered acclaim, earning him the “New Menace” award at the 2006 Stardust Film Awards.
Following his success in “Sarkar,” Zakir Hussain became a frequent collaborator in Ramgopal Varma’s projects. Another significant role came as Shardul in Raghavan’s “Johnny Gaddaar,” which resonated so strongly with audiences that he became associated with the character even in real life.
In addition to his acting talents, Zakir Hussain is a skilled musician proficient in percussion and singing. However, it’s important not to confuse him with the renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain (born 1951), who appeared in the film “Heat and Dust.”
