Girish Karnad, born on May 19, 1938, and passing away on June 10, 2019, was a versatile Indian personality who excelled as an actor, film director, Kannada writer, playwright, and was honored with the prestigious Jnanpith Award. He was known for his work in various Indian languages such as Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi films.
In the 1960s, his emergence as a playwright was a significant milestone in the evolution of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, akin to the contributions of Badal Sarkar in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi.
Karnad’s illustrious career spanned four decades during which he crafted plays, often using historical and mythological elements to address contemporary issues. He also translated his plays into English, receiving critical acclaim.
Many of his works were translated into other Indian languages and were directed by renowned directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Karanth, Alyque Padamsee, Prasanna, Arvind Gaur, Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Shyamanand Jalan, Amal Allanaa, and Zafer Mohiuddin.
Apart from his contributions to theater and literature, Karnad was an active figure in Indian cinema, where he worked as an actor, director, and screenwriter in both Hindi and Kannada films, earning several awards.
He was honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards by the Government of India and received four Filmfare Awards, including three for Best Director in the Kannada film industry and one for Best Screenplay. Additionally, he presented a popular weekly science magazine program called “Turning Point,” which aired on Doordarshan in 1991.
