Binod Pradhan

Birth Place : Kalimpong, India

Biography:

Binod Pradhan is a multifaceted Indian professional known for his roles as a cinematographer, director, and actor. He has made significant contributions to the film industry, particularly as a cinematographer on several highly acclaimed and award-winning films such as “1942 A Love Story,” “Devdas,” “Rang De Basanti,” “Mission Kashmir,” and “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.”

Binod Pradhan’s early years were spent in the picturesque hill town of Kalimpong, West Bengal. His fascination with photography was ignited when his father, H. K. Pradhan, who operated a photo studio, gave him his first box camera. Binod’s journey with the camera began as he experimented with capturing black-and-white images and attempting to colorize them using water-paints. Despite initial displeasure, his father recognized his talent, and many of Binod’s photographs adorned the studio’s display case, earning him an Asahi Pentax camera. By the age of 14, he was already taking charge of studio operations.

However, Binod Pradhan soon realized that the isolated life in Kalimpong limited his opportunities in photography. The absence of formal training and a platform for learning and sharing experiences led him to explore the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Armed with his portfolio, he secured admission into a three-year cinematography course.

His entry into the film industry materialized when film director Prem Sagar visited FTII to evaluate students’ work. Impressed by Binod’s portfolio, Prem Sagar offered him a position as an assistant at Sagar Arts. Binod worked alongside Prem Sagar on movies like “Charas” and “Ram Bharose,” starring Dharam-Hema Malini. However, he felt that he wasn’t making a distinct mark in the vast film industry, which prompted him to consider other avenues.

During this challenging phase, he formed a meaningful connection with a Kutchi family and fell in love with Dolly. Despite facing obstacles in convincing her parents, Binod eloped with Dolly and returned to Kalimpong. They became parents to their first child, Binay, and later had a second son, Deep Pradhan.

Gradually, work started trickling in as old friends approached him with assignments. He collaborated with renowned filmmakers like Mani Kaul on “Ghashiram Kotwal” and Jabbar Patel on “Jait Re Jait.” He also worked on the Assamese film “Apa Roopa.”

Binod Pradhan’s career gained momentum when Kundan Shah brought together his FTII colleagues for the iconic film “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro,” which eventually achieved cult status.

Binod Pradhan’s journey in the film industry has been marked by resilience and determination, and he has left an indelible mark with his exceptional cinematography skills.
