TheatreStory:
The video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias served as the basis for the 2026 American martial arts dark fantasy film Mortal Kombat II. It is the fourth movie in the Mortal Kombat franchise and the sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021). Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Damon Herriman (in a different character), Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Tati Gabrielle are among the returning cast members. Simon McQuoid is the director, while Jeremy Slater is the writer.
The movie centers on Johnny Cage, a martial arts actor who, with the aid of Edenian princess Kitana, is enlisted by the thunder god Raiden and Sonya Blade to fight alongside other Earthrealm fighters in an interdimensional competition against the Outworld warriors in order to overthrow the despotic emperor Shao Kahn. Producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director McQuoid started discussing the franchise’s future after Mortal Kombat’s April 2021 release. These discussions included stand-alone movies centered around Johnny Cage and Bi-Han/Sub-Zero as well as a sequel to the 2021 movie. The sequel was approved by New Line Cinema in 2022, with Slater writing the screenplay and McQuoid directing once more. In Australia, filming started in June 2023, was put on hold in mid-July because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, started again in mid-November, and ended in late January 2024.
Warner Bros. Pictures released Mortal Kombat II in theaters in the US on May 8, 2026, following its April 27, 2026, debut at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Despite being scored higher than its predecessor, the picture earned mixed reviews from critics and made $129 million worldwide on a $80 million production budget.
Plot
In a flashback, Emperor Shao Kahn defeats King Jerrod in Mortal Kombat, assuming control of Edenia under the name Outworld. Princess Kitana is his daughter, while Queen Sindel is his consort. Twenty years later, as the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament approaches, Quan Chi, on Shao Kahn’s instructions, brings Kung Lao and Kano back to life. Because Kano is already corrupt, Quan Chi is unable to corrupt and control him. A washed-up actor named Johnny Cage is brought back to Earthrealm by Lord Raiden and Sonya Blade to battle as their fifth champion with Cole Young, Liu Kang, Jax Briggs, and Sonya, but Johnny declines to take part.
The competition starts, with Johnny being forced to teleport to fight Kitana and Sonya facing a corrupted Sindel in the opening round. In defiance of Shao Kahn’s explicit commands, Kitana beats Johnny but spares him, while Sonya kills Sindel. While Quan Chi retrieves Shinnok’s pilfered amulet from Kano, Kitana confesses she is a spy for Raiden, but her bodyguard Jade confronts her for betraying Shao Kahn. After a vengeful Kung Lao shows up and injures Raiden, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung are able to absorb his power into the amulet, which they subsequently attach to Shao Kahn to make him immortal. As a result, Raiden is rendered helpless. Liu Kang and Kung Lao square battle in the second round. Liu Kang is compelled to kill Kung Lao in spite of his attempts to save him. After defeating Jade in battle, Jax spares her in order to make up for what Kitana did for Johnny. Cole battles Shao Kahn and mortally wounds him, but Shao Kahn kills Cole before destroying his body because Cole’s wounds heal fast.
Liu Kang, Jax, Sonya, and Johnny go to the Tarkatans’ house after realizing they can’t beat Shao Kahn while he has the amulet. As he leads them to a secret door beneath Shao Kahn’s palace, Johnny fights and overcomes their commander Baraka, recovering his self-confidence and winning Baraka’s faith. After Jade captures Kitana, Shao Kahn chains her up in the public square. As the four Earthrealm champions attempt to obtain the amulet, Shao Kahn kills Jax, and Liu Kang and Sonya are sent to the next round of the competition. Kano betrays Shao Kahn and tells Johnny that a resurrected Bi-Han possesses the amulet and is presently in the Netherrealm because he prefers the opulence and wealth of Earthrealm over Outworld. Raiden sends Kano and Johnny to the Netherrealm to destroy the amulet with what little remaining strength he possesses.
Liu Kang realizes he is not the chosen one when Shao Kahn gravely wounds him in the last round. Declaring that he will save the fallen, Liu Kang vanishes into flames. Kitana is set free by Sonya before Shao Kahn, who wins the Outworld tournament, knocks her out. Kitana faces Shao Kahn one-on-one after denouncing him and formally switching allegiance to Earthrealm, giving them another champion. Together with a reformed Jade and the soul of Hanzo Hasashi, Johnny and Kano battle Bi-Han and shatter the amulet, unlocking Johnny’s powers in the process. Kitana unmasks and kills Shao Kahn, who is now mortal, releasing Edenia to become its queen. When the amulet is destroyed, Raiden regains his strength and defeats Shang Tsung with ease, despite Shang Tsung’s attempts to murder him while he is weak. After a while, Kano, who has captured Quan Chi, is reunited with Johnny, Sonya, Raiden, Kitana, Jade, and Baraka. They want to utilize Quan Chi to restore the other fallen champions.
