Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada was born on October 12, 1960 A Golden Globe, two Primetime Emmys, a British Academy Television Award, a Japan Academy Film Prize, two Hochi Film Awards, a Mainichi Film Award, three Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Actor, four Kinema Junpo Awards, and recognition from the Yokohama Film Festival are just a few of the many honors he has received. His “artistic developments, improvements, and accomplishments” earned him the Japanese government’s Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 2018, and Time magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2025.
He was the protégé of actor Sonny Chiba and started his career at the age of five in the middle of the 1960s. A Kyokushin Karate black belt, he first became well-known for his parts in action movies from Japan and Hong Kong before making a name for himself as a serious actor. International audiences are most familiar with him from his performances as Ryuji Takayama in Ring (1998), in which he costarred with Nanako Matsushima, who also costarred with him in the 1997 television drama A Story of Love. He gained theatrical recognition for his portrayal of the Fool in a 1999–2000 production of King Lear by Shakespeare, which resulted in his 2002 designation as an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire.
Sanada has appeared in a number of Hollywood productions, including Sunshine (2007), Speed Racer (2008), The Wolverine, 47 Ronin (both 2013), Minions (2015), Life (2017), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Army of the Dead (2021), Bullet Train (2022), John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), and as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2021). He also appeared on the HBO programs Westworld (2018–2020) and Lost (2010) on a regular basis. For his portrayal of Yoshii Toranaga, the title character of the FX historical drama series Shōgun (2024), a fictionalized version of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Sanada received praise. Sanada received multiple best actor awards for this performance.
