Karl-Heinz Urban (born June 7, 1972) is a New Zealand actor known for his work in both television and film. He began his career in New Zealand, appearing in films and TV series such as Xena: Warrior Princess, before making his Hollywood debut in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship. Urban gained widespread recognition for his roles as Éomer in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Vaako in the Riddick series, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the Star Trek reboot films, Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy (2004), John “Reaper” Grimm in Doom (2005), Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012), Gavin Magary in Pete’s Dragon (2016), and Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok (2017). He also starred in the sci-fi series Almost Human (2013) and has played Billy Butcher in Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys since 2019.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Urban was introduced to film at an early age through his mother, who worked in the industry. He developed a passion for acting in school and landed his first role at eight years old in the TV series Pioneer Woman. After high school, he briefly attended Victoria University of Wellington before leaving to pursue acting full-time. He gained experience in local TV commercials, theater productions, and television roles before transitioning to Hollywood.
Urban’s breakout Hollywood role came with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he played Éomer. He went on to star in major films, including The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, Star Trek, and Dredd. A longtime Star Trek fan, Urban actively pursued the role of Dr. McCoy, earning praise for his faithful portrayal of the character. He reprised the role in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
Beyond acting, Urban has supported various charities, serving as a celebrity ambassador for KidsCan, which provides essential resources for disadvantaged children in New Zealand. In 2022, he became an official ambassador for UNICEF Aotearoa New Zealand, advocating for children’s rights globally.
Urban was married to Natalie Wihongi from 2004 to 2014, with whom he has two sons. He later dated actress Katee Sackhoff from 2014 to 2018. In addition to his film work, he appeared in Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart in 2020, alongside other Lord of the Rings cast members, to support charitable causes.
