Chitrangada Singh, born on August 30th, is an Indian actress primarily active in Hindi cinema. She stepped into the world of acting through the crime drama “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” (2005), marking her debut. This performance earned her the Bollywood Movie Award for Best Female Debut. She is also recognized for her appearances in various special dance numbers.
Chitrangda Singh was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and spent her early years in locations such as Kota in Rajasthan, Bareilly, and Sophia Girls’ School in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Col. Niranjan Singh, was an ex-Indian Army officer, resulting in her moving to different places due to his transferable job. Her brother, Digvijay Singh Chahal, is a golfer. After her education at Sophia Girls’ School in Meerut, she pursued a degree in Home Science with a focus on food and nutrition from Lady Irwin College in New Delhi.
Initially, Singh embarked on a modeling career before transitioning to the world of cinema. Following her college studies, she ventured into modeling, associating with brands like ICICI bank and Alukkas Jewellery, among others. Her fame grew after her appearance in the music video “Tum To Thehre Pardesi” sung by Altaf Raja. She gained attention for her role in the music video “Sunset Point” by Gulzar, and later, she featured in a music video by singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya.
Chitrangda Singh’s highly acclaimed debut in Sudhir Mishra’s film “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” in 2005 garnered significant praise. Her portrayal was noted for infusing her character with profound dignity and decency, as highlighted by a review in The Washington Post. She followed this with a role in the 2005 film “Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow.”
Taking a hiatus from acting between 2005 and 2008, she returned in 2008 with a leading role opposite Sanjay Suri in the romantic-comedy “Sorry Bhai!” Directed by Onir. Unfortunately, the movie’s release coincided with the Mumbai terror attacks, leading to a disappointing performance at the box office.
Subsequently, Singh appeared in successful films like the crime thriller “Yeh Saali Zindagi” (2011), romantic comedies “Desi Boyz” (2011) and “I, Me Aur Main” (2013), the financial thriller “Baazaar” (2018), crime thriller “Bob Biswas” (2021), and mystery thriller “Gaslight” (2023). She also ventured into production with the sports drama “Soorma” (2018). Her foray into the digital realm occurred with the romantic comedy anthology “Modern Love Mumbai” (2022).
