Madhava is Hema’s and her father’s devoted companion, servant, and cowherd. In addition, he plays the role of Shiva in the regional plays. Hema’s father is a gifted poet in addition to being a teacher. Nevertheless, he is unable to locate a publisher to print his poems because his classical poetry is no longer in vogue.
Due to the caste and economic class distinctions that exist in their village, Hema and Madhava are unaware of their love for one another. Hema, who plays Parvati in a production, is the first to confess her love for him, but she keeps it to herself because of the societal stigma.
One day, Madhava sells his cows and lends the money to Hema’s father via a family acquaintance to cover the cost of Lalitha, his older sister,’s wedding. Hema’s father provides Madhava his manuscripts to be printed after learning of what he has done.
When Madhava returns from his trip to the city to have them printed, he witnesses Hema being brought to an asylum. He finds out about the events leading up to Hema’s current state of mind, namely the attempted rape by Hema’s brother-in-law and Lalitha’s passing.
Pretending to be mentally sick, Madhava gets admitted to the same facility and endures a great deal of suffering in an attempt to save Hema. He is wrongfully accused of trying to rape her and is placed in shock treatment after stopping a guard from abusing her.
He makes numerous attempts to aid her in regaining her memory. After she is safely rescued, she wants to marry him when she eventually does and realizes what he accomplished for her. Madhava, on the other hand, rejects her proposal because he comes from a lower social class. Sripathi, Hema’s fiancé, persuades him to reconsider. At last, Hema and Madhava come together.
