Biography:

Kalpana Rai, an Indian actress hailing from Andhra Pradesh, had a prolific career primarily in Telugu cinema. Born in Kakinada on May 9, 1950, she made her entry into the film industry after gaining experience in stage acting. Over the course of her career, she appeared in a remarkable 430 films, earning a reputation for her comical roles, often characterized by the unique dialect of the Godavari districts. Despite her extensive filmography, Kalpana Rai tragically passed away in relative poverty on February 6, 2008.

Kalpana Rai’s debut in the world of acting came with the film “O Seeta Katha” in 1974. Her on-screen persona was notably associated with her ability to portray humorous characters, and her distinctive portrayal of the Godavari dialect. Her final film role was in “Soggadu” in 2005, marking the conclusion of her long and diverse career.

Sadly, Kalpana Rai’s passing was a somber affair. She succumbed to her illness at her residence in Indiranagar, Hyderabad. Despite her substantial contributions to the world of cinema, she faced financial difficulties in her later years. The Movie Artistes’ Association contributed a meager sum of Rs.10,000 for her funeral, and her final farewell was notably lacking in attendees, highlighting the financial struggles she encountered throughout her life.
