Padmavathy Iyengar, known by her stage name Menaka, is a distinguished Indian actress and film producer, renowned for her contributions to South Indian cinema. Born into a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, India, Menaka grew up as the only daughter among four siblings, with both her parents being school teachers.
Her acting journey commenced in 1979 with the Tamil film “Ramayi Vayasukku Vanthutta,” marking the beginning of a prolific career that spanned from 1980 to 1987. During this period, she graced the screen as a heroine in over 125 films, predominantly in Malayalam cinema. Menaka’s versatility also extended to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films.
In 1987, Menaka tied the knot with Malayalam film producer G. Suresh Kumar at Guruvayur Temple, marking a significant milestone in her personal life. Together, they have two daughters, Revathy and Keerthy Suresh, both of whom have made their mark in the film industry, with Keerthy following in her mother’s footsteps as a celebrated actress.
After a hiatus of 19 years, Menaka made a remarkable comeback to the silver screen in 2011, essaying a character role in Fazil’s “Living Together.” Her enduring legacy and significant contributions to Indian cinema were recognized at the 8th SIIMA, where she was honored with the SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award.
