Kanam (transl. Particle) is a film directed by A. L. Vijay and produced by Lyca Productions. It features Sai Pallavi, Naga Shourya, and Veronika Arora in the lead roles. The music was composed by Sam CS, with editing by Anthony and cinematography by Nirav Shah. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film were released on 27 April 2018.
Plot
The story revolves around Thulasi (Sai Pallavi) and Krishna (Naga Shourya). Thulasi becomes pregnant by Krishna at the age of 19, but their family decides to terminate the pregnancy. Five years later, they get married, but Thulasi struggles with their past. Krishna helps her overcome her pain, and she begins to lead a happier life.
Unbeknownst to them, their unborn daughter, Diya (Veronika Arora), has always been with them invisibly. When Krishna’s father (Nizhalgal Ravi) visits him at his new flat, Diya starts following him and later causes his death in their building’s water tank. Diya then targets and kills Thulasi’s mother (Rekha) in an elevator at Krishna’s construction site. These deaths lead the investigating Sub-Inspector Raghavan (RJ Balaji (in Tamil)) / SI Agni (Priyadarshi (in Telugu)) to suspect foul play.
As more deaths occur, it becomes clear that anyone who meets Thulasi and Krishna is in danger. Thulasi realizes that the deaths are connected to her past abortion, where she was pressured by her family and Krishna to terminate her pregnancy with Diya. She tries to warn her uncle (Jayakumar J), but he is killed before she can save him. Thulasi finally understands that Diya is responsible for the deaths.
Despite Thulasi’s warnings, Krishna remains skeptical and takes her to see a psychiatrist. Later, when Krishna leaves for a construction site without informing Thulasi, she rushes to save him from an accident. Still unconvinced, Krishna plans a Pooja with a priest, but Thulasi’s nightmares about Diya’s suffering lead her to send the priests away.
When Krishna disappears, Thulasi searches for him, and Diya tries to kill Krishna by trapping him in a room with closing walls. Meanwhile, Agni/Raghavan begins to believe Thulasi’s claims and searches for her. He finds her unconscious after an accident and rushes her to the hospital, where she is revived. Thulasi’s spirit confronts Diya, preventing her from harming Krishna. Thulasi is relieved to finally meet Diya and learns that she is pregnant again.
The movie ends with a message about the consequences of abortion.
