TheatreDhoom 2, alternatively known as “Dhoom 2: Back in Action” and stylized as “Dhoom: 2,” is a Hindi-language heist action thriller directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and written by Vijay Krishna Acharya, based on a story by Aditya Chopra, who also produced the film under Yash Raj Films.
The star-studded cast includes Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, and Uday Chopra. Shot across India, Durban, and Rio de Janeiro, it marked a milestone as the first major Hindi film shot in Brazil. Serving as a sequel to the 2004 hit “Dhoom,” it continues the saga of buddy cops Jai Dixit and Ali Khan, reprised by Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. Yash Raj Films partnered with Pepe Jeans and Coca-Cola for strategic promotional tie-ups, enhancing the film’s visibility. The music was helmed by Pritam Chakraborty, complemented by background scores from Salim–Sulaiman.
The plot revolves around Mr. A, a daring thief who specializes in stealing valuable artifacts, collaborating with a woman he finds irresistible yet cannot fully trust. Pursuing them relentlessly are three determined police officers.
Released on November 24, 2006, “Dhoom 2” received positive reviews, lauding its gripping action sequences, mesmerizing soundtrack, breathtaking cinematography, and standout performances, particularly from Hrithik Roshan. The film shattered records at the box office, grossing over ₹1.514 billion, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2006 and, at the time, the highest-grossing Bollywood film worldwide. It held this title until surpassed by “Om Shanti Om.” “Dhoom 2” also ranks as the twelfth-highest-grossing Hindi film to date.
At the 52nd Filmfare Awards, the film garnered eight nominations, including Best Film and Best Director for Sanjay Gadhvi, with Aishwarya Rai winning Best Actress and Hrithik Roshan awarded Best Actor.
The success of “Dhoom 2” paved the way for its sequel, “Dhoom 3,” released on December 20, 2013, and remains a favorite for lead actor Abhishek Bachchan within the franchise.
