Jayachitra, a versatile Indian actress known for her work in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada cinema, was born Rohini in Chennai to parents deeply entrenched in the entertainment industry. Her father, Mahendra, was a former lawyer turned veterinary doctor, while her mother, Ammaji (also known as Jayasree), was an actress who had starred in Tamil and Telugu films during the 1950s.
Her early exposure to the film industry began at the tender age of six when she debuted as a child star in the Telugu film “Bhakta Potana,” guided and encouraged by her mother. As a teenager, Jayachitra embarked on her journey as a leading actress, impressing directors with her talent. Despite initial rejections, her breakthrough came when she was cast by K.S. Gopalakrishnan for the Tamil film “Korathi Magan” in 1972. Impressed by her performance, Gopalakrishnan subsequently signed her for three films under his banner, christening her “Jayachitra.”
Throughout her career, she took on diverse roles, showcasing her fearlessness and spontaneity. Her filmography boasted notable collaborations with renowned directors and actors, including K. Balachander, Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan, among others. Her ventures extended across various genres, where she fearlessly faced challenges, such as encountering a snake in “Vellikizhamai Viratham” (1974) and a tiger in the Telugu film “Cheppindi Chesta” (1978).
Following a successful career as a lead actress, Jayachitra transitioned to character roles in films like K. Balachander’s “Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal” (1989). Subsequently, she ventured into television, producing, directing, and acting in popular serials like “Sumangali,” “Alaigal,” and “Sivaranjini.”
Outside of her artistic pursuits, Jayachitra delved into politics, aligning herself with the Congress party and actively participating in the TV Serial Producers’ Guild of South India as the chairperson of the action committee.
In her personal life, after marrying industrialist Ganesh in 1983, she shifted her focus to family life. She supported her son, Amresh, in pursuing a career in show business, grooming him for the industry. Despite her efforts, Amresh faced challenges in establishing himself as an actor, with several projects remaining incomplete.
Jayachitra also ventured into directing and producing films, marking her directorial debut with “Pudhiya Raagam” (1991). Later endeavors, including the film “Naane Ennul Illai” (2010) featuring her son Amresh, faced setbacks at the box office.
Despite the ups and downs in her family’s showbiz journey, Jayachitra remains a stalwart figure in the Indian film industry, having received recognition through awards such as the Kalaimamani Award from Tamil Nadu. Her husband Ganesh passed away in December 2020, marking a poignant moment in her personal life.
