TheatreThe 2008 Indian Hindi-language action thriller Ghajini is a remake of the director’s Tamil film of the same name and stars Aamir Khan, Asin Thottumkal, Jiah Khan, and Pradeep Rawat. Following a violent attack on him and his fiancée Kalpana, Sanjay Singhania, a powerful entrepreneur, suffers from anterograde amnesia. This is Asin’s first Hindi film, in which she also reprised her role from the original version and Jiah Khan’s penultimate film before her death in 2013.
The original film’s plot was inspired from Memento and Happy Go Lovely. Khan and Murugadoss co-wrote the remake, with Khan suggesting changes to suit the taste of the Hindi cinema audience. Allu Aravind, Madhu Mantena and Tagore Madhu jointly acted as the producers, while the film was distributed by Geetha Arts. A. R. Rahman composed the soundtrack and musical score, while cinematography and editing were handled by Ravi K. Chandran and Anthony.
Ghajini was theatrically released on 25 December 2008, where it became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year and the first Bollywood film to cross the ₹100 crore mark domestically, creating the 100 Crore Club. Ghajini’s paid preview collections were ₹ 2.7 crore. It went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film of all time until it was surpassed by 3 Idiots. Aamir’s character was featured in a 3D video game titled Ghajini – The Game, which is based on the film.
Sanjay Singhania, the head of the telecom company Air Voice, has anterograde amnesia, which Sunita, a medical student, is looking into. Since Sanjay is the subject of a criminal inquiry, Sunita conducts her investigation against the intentions of her professor, Dr. Debkumar Mitra. Sanjay, who has memory loss every fifteen minutes, employs a system of notes, photos, and body tattoos to help him recall his objective to exact revenge for the death of his fiancée Kalpana Shetty, who was murdered by Mumbai socialite and kingpin Ghajini Dharmatma.
Sunita, a medical student, is investigating the anterograde amnesia of Sanjay Singhania, the CEO of the telecom company Air Voice. Sunita investigates Sanjay against the wishes of her professor, Dr. Debkumar Mitra, because he is the focus of a criminal probe. Sanjay uses a system of notes, pictures, and body tattoos to assist him remember his goal of getting revenge for the murder of his fiancée Kalpana Shetty, who was killed by Mumbai socialite and kingpin Ghajini Dharmatma. Sanjay experiences memory loss every fifteen minutes.
Sanjay assaults Arjun and restrains him as he begins to read the second diary. Later on, he finds Ghajini at a college event where she is the honored guest. After photographing Ghajini, Sanjay makes the decision to murder him. But in the parking lot, Sanjay unintentionally assaults and murders one of Ghajini’s thugs. Ghajini is confused and doesn’t remember the event. He makes the decision to track down and murder everyone of his adversaries individually, but Sanjay is not one of them. Meanwhile, Sunita reaches the flat, discovers Arjun bound, battered, and chained, and finds out about Sanjay’s murderous scheme. She releases Arjun after stealing his diary.
Sunita discovers Kalpana after reading the journals following Sanjay’s incarceration. Due to an earlier commitment, Kalpana agrees to the idea in the second journal, but only if she buys three Ambassador automobiles. After a series of events, Sanjay makes the decision to eventually tell her the truth about himself. When Sanjay had to travel abroad for a few days, the diary comes to an abrupt stop.
Sunita finally finds out after some investigation that Kalpana went to Goa, where she discovered and rescued a number of females from a sex trafficking ring that Ghajini had set up. When Kalpana learns that two of the girls have disappeared, Ghajini meets her back in Mumbai before she leaves in anger. Later that evening, Kalpana receives a call from a constable alerting her to the fact that Ghajini has planned her murder and that his goons are holed up in her home. After she phones Sanjay, who discovers Kalpana stabbed, Kalpana is unable to defend herself, and he quickly arrives at her house. Before executing Kalpana in front of him, Ghajini strikes Sanjay in the head with an iron rod, causing a brain injury.
After discovering this startling reality, Sunita visits Sanjay in the hospital and confronts him about Kalpana’s murder. He becomes enraged and devastated, and Sunita assists him in locating Ghajini in his neighborhood. During his quest for Ghajini, Sanjay kills his men but suffers from a memory loss episode. Ghajini then takes advantage of the circumstance and stabs Sanjay while taunting him with the graphic story of how he killed Kalpana. Sanjay regains the memories of Kalpana and fights back with power fueled by rage as Ghajini prepares to kill Sunita in the same manner, forcing him to repeat the event. He later exacts revenge by killing Ghajini in the same manner and with the same iron rod.
After six months, Sanjay is back as chairman of Air Voice and assisting at Kalpana’s orphanage. Sanjay feels Kalpana by his side as Sunita gives him the cement pad bearing their footprints.
