Jiah Khan

Biography:

Nafisa Rizvi Khan, widely known as Jiah Khan, was a British-American actress and singer who made her mark in Hindi cinema, appearing in three films between 2007 and 2010.

Born in New York City to Indian parents, Jiah was raised and educated in London. With a strong desire to pursue acting, she relocated to Mumbai. Her debut came in the 2007 Ram Gopal Verma film Nishabd, earning her a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Debut. She gained further recognition for her role as a modern, independent woman in Ghajini, the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2008. After a brief hiatus, she returned to the screen with a praised comic performance in the 2010 romantic comedy Housefull, which became the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year.

Tragically, Jiah was found dead, in her Mumbai residence on 3 June 2013. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigated her death, which was ruled a suicide by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court. However, her mother alleged foul play, accusing Jiah’s boyfriend, actor Sooraj Pancholi, of murder. In 2018, Pancholi was charged with abetment.

Jiah Khan was born on February 20, 1988, in New York City to Ali Rizvi Khan, an American businessman, and Rabiya Amin, a former Hindi film actress. Her father left when she was two, and she was raised alongside her two younger sisters, Kavita and Karishma. Her paternal aunts include Pakistani actresses Hina Rizvi, Sangeeta (Parveen Rizvi), and Kaveeta (Nasreen Rizvi).

She moved to Mumbai to pursue acting, inspired by Urmila Matondkar’s performance in Rangeela. She studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Manhattan but left upon receiving a film offer. Jiah trained in various dance forms, including belly dancing, kathak, lambada, jazz, samba, and reggae, showcasing her diverse talents.
