Hailing from the small village of Belwa near Bettiah in Bihar’s West Champaran district, Manoj Bajpayee nurtured a dream of becoming an actor from a very young age. At seventeen, he relocated to Delhi and pursued admission to the esteemed National School of Drama, although he faced rejection four times. Undeterred by setbacks, he continued his passion for theater while studying in college.
Manoj Bajpayee made his foray into feature films with a brief one-minute appearance in “Drohkaal” (1994) and a minor role as a dacoit in Shekhar Kapur’s “Bandit Queen” (1994). Despite initially going unnoticed, his career took a significant turn when he portrayed the character of the gangster Bhiku Mhatre in Ram Gopal Varma’s crime drama “Satya” (1998). This role proved to be a breakthrough, earning him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
Following his success in “Satya,” Manoj Bajpayee continued to impress with notable roles in films like “Kaun?” (1999) and “Shool” (1999), the latter of which earned him his second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
Bajpayee further cemented his status as a formidable actor with the Special Jury National Award for his performance in “Pinjar” (2003). While he faced a period of smaller, less noticed roles in subsequent films, his portrayal of a cunning politician in the political thriller “Raajneeti” (2010) garnered widespread acclaim.
In 2012, Manoj Bajpayee took on the critically acclaimed lead role of Sardar Khan in “Gangs of Wasseypur,” a role that further solidified his reputation. His subsequent roles as a Naxalite in “Chakravyuh” (2012) and a CBI officer in “Special 26” (2013) continued to showcase his versatility and acting prowess.
