“Ye Maaya Chesave” is a 2010 Telugu-language romantic drama film directed and written by Gautham Vasudev Menon. The movie features Naga Chaitanya and Samantha, marking her debut in cinema. Produced by Manjula Ghattamaneni under the Indira Productions banner, the film boasts a soulful soundtrack composed by the legendary A. R. Rahman. The cinematography was handled by Manoj Paramahamsa, Anthony Gonsalves edited the film, and Umarji Anuradha penned the dialogues.
This film was simultaneously shot in Tamil as “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa,” starring Simbu and Trisha. “Ye Maaya Chesave” garnered positive reviews from critics and enjoyed success at the box office. It has been recognized as one of the “25 Greatest Telugu Films Of The Decade” by Film Companion.
The film’s inception came after the announcement of Gautham Menon’s Tamil project titled “Jessy.” Manjula Ghattamaneni, sister of Mahesh Babu, approached Gautham Menon to create a Telugu version of the same story, initially with Mahesh Babu as the lead actor. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Naga Chaitanya replaced Mahesh Babu. Samantha, a newcomer at the time who had previously acted in three unreleased Tamil films, made her debut in this film.
The story revolves around the romantic journey of two characters named Karthik and Jessie over the course of nearly three years. Gautham Menon envisioned the film as a conversation-driven love story that audiences could easily relate to. The film was shot in various locations, including Alappuzha, Goa, Hyderabad, and the United States, with Princeton University serving as a backdrop for song sequences.
In the Telugu version, Trisha and Silambarasan made cameo appearances, and renowned Telugu director Puri Jagannadh had a guest role.
The film’s soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, played a pivotal role in its success. It consisted of seven tracks with Telugu lyrics penned by Anantha Sreeram. Rahman’s compositions for the Tamil version were retained without alteration in the Telugu version. Rahman received his first Telugu Filmfare Award for this album. Interestingly, the same tunes were reused for the Hindi remake of the film, titled “Ekk Deewana Tha,” also directed by Gautham Menon.
Critics praised “Ye Maaya Chesave” for its feel-good factor and its ability to capture the charm and nuances of first love. The film was hailed as a timeless classic, making it a must-watch, especially for fans of romantic love stories.
