Subbalakshmi

Subbalakshmi is a renowned artist known for her multifaceted talents. She is not only a highly regarded Carnatic musician and composer but has also made a significant mark as an actress in Malayalam cinema. Her contribution to the film industry includes playing prominent supporting roles, often portraying grandmother characters in Malayalam movies. Subbalakshmi’s notable performances can be seen in films like “Kalyanaraman” (2002), “Pandippada” (2005), and “Nandanam” (2002).

In addition to her successful career in the entertainment industry, Subbalakshmi is also known for her personal life. She was married to the late Kalyanakrishnan, and the couple had two daughters and one son. Among her children, her younger daughter Thara Kalyan has followed in her footsteps and become a famous actress and acclaimed dancer in the Malayalam film industry.

Before venturing into movies, Subbalakshmi had a background in music and dance instruction. She served as a music and dance instructor at Jawahar Balabhavan and worked with All India Radio starting in 1951. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first lady composer from South India to work with All India Radio. Her contributions to music extend beyond the stage, as she has conducted numerous concerts and is also known as a dubbing artist.
