Vinu Chakravarthy, an Indian actor, screenwriter, and director, was renowned for his prolific career in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. Born on December 15, 1945, in Usilampatti, he pursued education at Wesley School in Royapettah and earned a commerce degree from A. M. Jain College. Before venturing into the entertainment industry, he briefly served as a Reserve Sub-Inspector at the Ice House police station and later worked for the Southern Railways. However, his passion for acting led him to join a drama troupe, where he not only performed in plays but also contributed as a scriptwriter.
Chakravarthy’s breakthrough in cinema came when he caught the eye of film producer Tiruppur Mani, who offered him a role in the Kannada film “Parasangada Gendethimma” in 1977. This film was later remade in Tamil as “Rosappu Ravikkaikari” in 1979, marking the start of his illustrious career. Over the years, he acted in over 1,000 films in various South Indian languages, with the majority of them in Tamil. Additionally, he ventured into directing films and is credited with introducing Silk Smitha to the industry.
Notably, Chakravarthy garnered attention for his criticism of television and film producer Ekta Kapoor’s portrayal of Silk Smitha in “The Dirty Picture,” a biographical film about the actress. He expressed dissatisfaction with the casting choices, particularly mentioning the difference in expressive eyes between Smitha and Vidya Balan, who portrayed her in the film.
