Gopalaratnam Venkateswaran, commonly known as G.V., was an Indian film producer and chartered accountant. He was most recognized as the elder brother of the acclaimed director and screenwriter, Mani Ratnam, as well as G. Srinivasan. Venkateswaran played a significant role in the Indian film industry, being the promoter of GV Films, one of the pioneering movie companies in India to raise capital through the stock market. He was also associated with Sujatha Productions. Besides his production work, he made cameo appearances in films such as “Pagaivan” and portrayed himself in “Raja Kaiya Vacha,” which starred Prabhu.
In his early life, G. Venkateswaran was born as the eldest son of S. Gopala Ratnam, a film producer for Venus Pictures. He pursued a commerce education at the University of Madras and subsequently became a chartered accountant. He practiced as a chartered accountant for nearly a decade before venturing into film distribution and production.
Unfortunately, G. Venkateswaran’s life took a tragic turn, as he passed away on May 3, 2003, at the age of 55, when he committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence. He left behind his wife, Sujatha, and two children. His untimely death marked a somber moment in the Indian film industry, where he had left a notable impact through his work as a producer and his contributions to the business side of filmmaking.
