Priyan (1964 – 9 November 2017) was an accomplished Indian cinematographer known for his work in Tamil language films. His journey in the film industry began as an assistant to the renowned filmmaker Balu Mahendra. However, Priyan transitioned into an independent cinematographer during the 1990s, gradually establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Tamil film industry, particularly in the 2000s. His notable collaborations included extensive work with director Hari, which contributed significantly to his reputation as a cinematographer.
Born and raised in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, Priyan’s initial exposure to cinema happened when he spent a summer vacation with his uncle Ganesan in Chennai. Recognizing Priyan’s passion for cinema, his uncle introduced him to K. Balaji, a well-known actor-producer in the Tamil film industry. This introduction marked the beginning of Priyan’s journey in the world of cinematography. He worked as an assistant cinematographer for five years in K. Balaji’s camera unit and was associated with the production house, Sujatha International.
Priyan’s career further blossomed when he had the opportunity to collaborate with prominent filmmakers like Balu Mahendra, contributing to films like “Moondram Pirai” (1982), “Olangal” (1982), “Sadma” (1983), and “Yathra” (1984). He also worked on projects by renowned directors such as Mani Ratnam and contributed to movies like “Pagal Nilavu” (1985) and “Nayakan” (1987). Later, he made his debut as an independent cinematographer with K. S. Adhiyaman’s “Thotta Chinungi” (1995) and continued to work on significant projects, particularly in association with director Cheran and high-profile films like “Thenali” (2000) and “Majunu” (2001). His close collaboration with director Hari led to a series of successful films, making Priyan a respected figure in the Tamil film industry. Tragically, he passed away due to a heart attack in his home.
