Theatre“Power,” a 2014 Indian Telugu-language action comedy film, represents the collaborative debut of director K. S. Ravindra and producer Rockline Venkatesh in Telugu cinema. The film features Ravi Teja, Hansika Motwani, and Regina Cassandra in prominent roles, with S. Thaman contributing to the musical composition. The narrative of “Power” revolves around two characters with strikingly similar appearances: Baldev Sahay, a corrupt Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Kolkata, and Tirupathi, an aspirant seeking to become a police officer in Hyderabad.
The Home Minister of Bengal recruits Tirupathi to impersonate Baldev and capture a gangster previously rescued by the corrupt ACP. The storyline delves into the reasons behind Baldev’s corruption and how Tirupathi carries out the unfinished mission. Production commenced on December 11, 2013, and spanned locations in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangkok, with the addition of Bulgaria for two songs, making it the first Telugu film to be shot in the latter country.
The film, released on September 12, 2014, emerged as a Super Hit at the box office. It was later remade in Bengali with the same title in 2016. The plot unfolds with Baldev Sahay, a valiant yet corrupt ACP in Kolkata, attempting to save a notorious gangster named Ganguly Bhai. Baldev loses his life in the process, leading to the kidnapping of Ganguly by Baldev’s associates Kundan and Rajeev.
Concerned about Ganguly’s potential capture, Home Minister Jayavardhan pledges to apprehend the gangster and even offers his resignation if unsuccessful. In Hyderabad, Tirupathi, identical in appearance to Baldev Sahay, aspires to become a police officer but faces repeated failures. Living with his brother-in-law Animutyam, a Crime Investigation (CI) officer, Tirupathi seeks the help of Nirupama, a purported gemstone trader.
Unbeknownst to Tirupathi, Nirupama is a con artist who provides him with a ring, claiming it has transformative powers. Tirupathi inadvertently aids Animutyam in apprehending a dangerous convict, only for his brother-in-law to claim credit for the accomplishment. Jayavardhan notices Tirupathi in the news and approaches him with a unique proposition: to impersonate Baldev and imprison Ganguly Bhai.
Tirupathi accepts the task, travels to Kolkata, and assumes the role of Baldev, leading to the release of Ganguly from Kundan and Rajeev’s clutches. As the story progresses, Tirupathi discovers the truth about Baldev’s past through a series of revelations. Baldev, initially a sincere cop, turned corrupt after personal tragedies, including the death of his mother who sacrificed her surgery fees to fulfill his dream of becoming a cop.
This heartbreaking incident propelled Baldev into a life of corruption to repay the debt incurred for honest candidates. The film takes a dual narrative approach, intertwining the present with Tirupathi’s efforts to correct the course of events and the past events leading to Baldev’s corruption. Kundan and Rajeev, Baldev’s assistants, were tasked with gathering evidence of his corruption, ultimately leading to a complex web of deceit and betrayal.
Baldev’s engagement to Vaishnavi, his love for philanthropy, and his quest to bring criminals to justice are shattered when his corrupt actions are exposed during a raid. The film skillfully weaves together elements of love, tragedy, and redemption, showcasing the complexities of human nature. In a twist of fate, Baldev’s attempt to present Ganguly and Tiwari in court is thwarted by the betrayal of his allies, leading to a tragic sequence where Baldev loses his loved ones.
The narrative then shifts to Tirupathi’s present-day endeavors to expose the corrupt Jayavardhan and Ganguly Bhai, ultimately leading to a confrontation and justice prevailing. The film concludes with Tirupathi, having resolved the chaos caused by Baldev’s corruption, choosing to live in Kolkata under the guise of Baldev Sahay. The intricate plot, with its blend of action, comedy, and drama, positions “Power” as a compelling cinematic experience.
