Theatre“Maryada Ramanna” is a 2010 Indian Telugu-language action-comedy drama film that was co-written and directed by the renowned filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli. The movie was produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under the banner of Arka Media Works and featured a cast including Sunil, Saloni, and Nagineedu. The music for the film was composed by the talented M. M. Keeravani, while the cinematography and editing were handled by Ram Prasad and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao, respectively. Interestingly, the film drew its inspiration from the English movie “Our Hospitality” and its Indian adaptation, the Kannada film “Balagalittu Olage Baa” (2002).
Rajamouli’s inspiration for “Maryada Ramanna” came from watching Buster Keaton’s silent comedy film, “Our Hospitality.” Impressed by the story, he aimed to reinterpret it in his own unique way. However, when he attempted to reach out to the original creators of the film, he discovered that they were no longer alive, and the film’s copyright had expired due to it being more than 75 years old since its release.
Collaborating with S. S. Kanchi, Rajamouli adapted the story, setting it in the Rayalaseema region and emphasizing the coexistence of factional violence and hospitality in that backdrop.
The film was released on July 23, 2010, and received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Despite being made on a budget ranging from ₹12 to ₹14 crore (approximately $2.6 to $3.1 million), “Maryada Ramanna” achieved significant commercial success, grossing ₹40 crore (around $8.75 million) at the box office, with distributors earning over ₹29 crore (approximately $6.35 million).
This success positioned it as one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2010. It also earned recognition with four Nandi Awards, including the title of Best Popular Feature Film.
The film’s popularity extended beyond Telugu cinema, as it was remade in several languages, including Kannada as “Maryade Ramanna” (2011), Bengali as “Faande Poriya Boga Kaande Re” (2011), Hindi as “Son of Sardaar” (2012), Tamil as “Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham” (2014), and Malayalam as “Ivan Maryadaraman” (2015).
“Maryada Ramanna” is a notable Telugu film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, inspired by the classic Buster Keaton film “Our Hospitality.” It achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success and was subsequently remade in various Indian languages.
