Prabhakar initiated his career in the film industry by taking on minor negative roles in Kannada movies. However, he rapidly rose to prominence, becoming one of the most sought-after antagonists in both Kannada and Telugu cinema during the late 1970s and 1980s. By the years 1983-84, he transitioned into playing leading roles as an action hero in Kannada films, maintaining his status as a highly sought-after hero until 1993-94.
He formed successful on-screen partnerships with the top Kannada heroines of his time, including Jayamala, Aarathi, Bharathi, Lakshmi, and Jayanthi. Notably, Prabhakar also directed approximately 9-10 films in Kannada, where he played the role of the hero.
