Erode Soundar, an Indian film writer and director, was a prominent figure in the Tamil film industry. His career, primarily in the 1990s, was marked by a close collaboration with director K. S. Ravikumar, especially in the realm of village action films. Notable works include “Cheran Pandiyan” (1991), “Putham Pudhu Payanam” (1991), and “Nattamai” (1994). These films achieved considerable success, leading to remakes in various languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Bengali. For “Cheran Pandiyan” and “Nattamai,” Soundar received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer and the Best Dialogue Writer award for “Cheran Pandiyan.”
Although Soundar was primarily recognized as a writer, he also ventured into directing, with “Mudhal Seethanam” (1992), in which he played a supporting role. His association with actor Sarathkumar, cultivated through K. S. Ravikumar’s projects, provided him with the opportunity to direct Sarathkumar in “Simmarasi” (1998). His final film, “Ayya Ullen Ayya” (2020), had a relatively low-profile release and featured his grandson Kabilesh in the lead role.
On December 5, 2020, at the age of 63, Erode Soundar passed away due to a kidney-related illness, marking the end of a career that left a significant imprint on the world of Tamil cinema.
