PLOT:
Kanneganti Atheist Gopala Rao lives with his deeply spiritual and God-fearing wife Meenakshi and their school-age son Moksha. He has achieved success in his business, which he runs and sells Hindu god statues. Gopala Rao blocks and directs the crowds away from the area by saying that Lord Krishna has arrived when his family participates in a ritual led by a bogus Godman Siddheshwar Maharaj that entails walking on burning coal. Siddheshwar Maharaj is incensed and tells him that there will be serious repercussions for what he committed.
As the house had been financed and Gopala Rao had taken out loans to renovate his shop, an apparent earthquake ruins his shop, leaving him unsure of how to make ends meet. Gopala Rao and his assistant Ottu visit the insurance company to make a claim, but the company declines to provide him with insurance since the shop’s destruction was an Act of God and the firm would not be liable for it according to the agreements that Gopala Rao had signed without his knowledge. Gopala Rao makes arrangements for the land where the business was to be sold, but no one is interested in buying it because they view it as “impure” because the idols of God were broken on the same site owing to an earthquake.
Despite Meenakshi’s resistance, Gopala Rao chooses to sue God and demand compensation. When Gopala Rao and Ottu are unable to locate a lawyer to represent them in court, they turn to Akbar Khan, a lawyer with special needs, who asserts that Gopala Rao may represent himself in court if no one else does so in accordance with an Indian Constitutional provision. While Gopala Rao files a petition to have his case heard by the court, Akbar makes a vow to support him in the legal process.
Gopala Rao destroys his own idol, which the people had been praying to, and tells them not to trust in false godmen since their goal is to profit from their followers’ devotion. Instead, he exhorts them to believe in the God that resides within each individual and begs them to work together to please God. Gopala Rao prevents the populace from attacking the godmen after they turn against them in outrage. Gopala Rao finds one of Hari’s keychains and attempts to keep it with him, but Hari’s voice commands him to throw it away because doing so would transform him into someone who thinks that objects rather than people are Gods. Hari then ascends to the sky.
