TheatreBaadshah, released in 2013, is a Telugu-language action-comedy film directed by Sreenu Vaitla and starring Jr. NTR and Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles. The film garnered significant attention prior to its release due to the star power and the anticipation for the collaboration between the talented actors and director. The movie, while offering entertainment and commercial appeal, received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.
The story revolves around Rama Rao (Jr. NTR), a common man with an extraordinary memory, who aspires to become a Baadshah (king) in the criminal underworld. However, his mother (played by Suhasini Maniratnam) has different plans for him, urging him to become a police officer instead. As the narrative unfolds, Rama Rao’s life takes unexpected turns, and he eventually finds himself in a situation where he must take on the identity of Baadshah to avenge a personal tragedy.
One of the film’s strengths is its engaging screenplay, which combines action, comedy, and emotional moments. Jr. NTR’s charismatic presence and his ability to effortlessly switch between different emotions contribute to the film’s appeal. His comic timing, especially in the scenes involving his “Dil Se” gang, adds a lighthearted touch to the otherwise serious plot.
Kajal Aggarwal, playing Janaki, the love interest of Jr. NTR’s character, delivers a decent performance. The chemistry between the two leads adds a romantic angle to the story, though some critics felt that their love track lacked depth and development.
The film’s supporting cast, including Navdeep, Brahmanandam, and Mukesh Rishi, provide comic relief and support the main narrative. Brahmanandam’s portrayal of Padmanabha Simha, a don-turned-astrologer, stands out as one of the highlights, generating laughter with his quirky predictions and eccentric behavior.
However, “Tollywood Baadshah” isn’t without its shortcomings. The film’s runtime, which exceeds two and a half hours, has been criticized for being too long and affecting the pacing of the story. Additionally, the second half of the film deviates from the initial premise and becomes convoluted at times, with an abundance of twists that can be confusing for the audience.
The music composed by S. Thaman was well-received, with catchy songs that added to the film’s entertainment value. The song “Diamond Girl” gained popularity and remains memorable to this day.
In terms of technical aspects, the film boasts high production values, with vibrant visuals and stylish action sequences. However, some critics pointed out that the visual effects in certain scenes were not up to par, affecting the overall visual experience.
“Tollywood Baadshah” is an action-comedy entertainer that tries to strike a balance between humor, emotion, and drama. While it succeeded in attracting audiences to theaters and enjoyed commercial success, it received mixed reviews from critics due to its uneven pacing, convoluted plot, and excessive runtime. Nevertheless, Jr. NTR’s energetic performance, the engaging screenplay, and the blend of action and comedy elements ensured that the film remained a watchable option for fans of Telugu cinema.
