TheatreThe 2019 Indian Tamil-language historical action drama film Asuran is produced and directed by Kalaipuli S. Thanu and vetrimaaran. It is based on Poomani’s novel Vekkai, which translates to “Heat.” Dhanush, Manju Warrier (making her Tamil film debut), Ken Karunas, and Teejay Arunasalam are among the actors starring in the movie. The film’s music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. R. Ramar did the editing, and Velraj handled the cinematography.
On October 4, 2019, Asuran was released in cinemas. The movie did well at the box office in terms of sales. At the 67th National Film Awards, the movie took home two prizes: Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor (Dhanush).
It was one of the ten Indian movies that were shown in the Best Foreign Film category of the 78th Golden Globe Awards (2021). It was also shown at the Indian Panorama section of the 51st International Film Festival of India. The movie was adapted as Narappa (2021) in Telugu.
The story unfolds in two timelines: one in the present day where Sivasamy is an aging farmer trying to protect his family, and another in the past which reveals the events that led to the current conflict. In the past, a series of tragic events stemming from caste-based discrimination and land disputes force Sivasamy’s family into a desperate situation where they must fight for their survival and dignity.
Sivasamy, driven by a fierce desire to protect his family and seek justice, undergoes a transformation from a pacifist farmer to a determined avenger. The film portrays the brutal realities of caste discrimination, the exploitation of the poor by the powerful, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their loved ones.
“Asuran” is noted for its intense and raw portrayal of violence and revenge, juxtaposed with moments of poignant human drama and familial bonds. Dhanush’s powerful performance as Sivasamy earned widespread acclaim, as did Vetrimaaran’s direction and the film’s hard-hitting narrative. It received critical acclaim and was also a commercial success, further solidifying its impact in Tamil cinema.
