Biography:

Harris Jayaraj, born on January 8, 1975, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a prominent Indian composer renowned for his work in Tamil cinema. While he primarily composes soundtracks for Tamil films, he has also contributed to a few Telugu and Hindi films. He has received numerous awards, including the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Throughout his career, he has garnered recognition, including 6 Filmfare Awards South and various other accolades. In 2019, he was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute for his significant contributions to Tamil cinema music.

Harris Jayaraj was raised in Chennai within a Christian family, with his father coming from a Tamil Christian background and his mother from a Hindu Naidu background. He began his musical journey with training in Carnatic music at a young age and later excelled as a guitarist. He gained recognition in the industry by working as a programmer under various music directors, contributing to more than 600 projects by 2000. He transitioned from classical guitar to keyboard and synthesizers, learning and experimenting on his own.

Harris made his debut as a composer in the film industry with Gautham Vasudev Menon’s “Minnale.” The soundtrack received widespread acclaim, and he gained further recognition through successful albums like “Kaakha Kaakha,” “Anniyan,” and “Ghajini.” His collaborations with directors like Gautham Menon and S. Shankar yielded hit soundtracks that became an integral part of the movies’ success. Harris also ventured into Telugu cinema with well-received albums such as “Sainikudu” and “Munna.” His musical style often incorporated unique elements and was appreciated for its synergy with the films’ themes.

Harris’s world tour titled “Harris on the Edge” in 2011 marked his foray into live concert performances, featuring popular playback singers and musicians. He established his own studio, Studio H, in 2017, equipped with advanced audio recording technology. Harris Jayaraj’s contributions to the music industry have earned him a prominent place among contemporary composers in Indian cinema.
