Bommireddy Nagi Reddi (2 December 1912 – 25 February 2004) was a prominent figure in Indian cinema, distinguishing himself as both a film producer and director, with a significant impact on Telugu cinema. His contributions spanned over four decades, and he played a pivotal role in shaping the industry during his time.
Nagi Reddi is best remembered for establishing Vijaya Vauhini Studios in Chennai, a groundbreaking venture that stood as Asia’s largest film studio at the time. Often referred to as B. Nagi Reddi to avoid confusion with his elder brother, the director B. N. Reddi, who shared the same initials, Nagi Reddi became a widely recognized and respected figure in the film fraternity.
Throughout his illustrious career, Nagi Reddi, in collaboration with his close friend and partner Aluri Chakrapani, produced a remarkable portfolio of over fifty films, showcasing his versatility in four South Indian languages as well as Hindi. His filmography included a diverse range of genres, such as mythological, devotional, and historical movies. Some of his most notable works include “Patala Bhairavi” (1951), “Maya Bazaar” (1957), and “Missamma” (1955).
Nagi Reddi’s influence extended beyond filmmaking; he served as the president of the Film Federation of India twice, during the years 1960–61 and 1962–63, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the industry. As the landscape of Telugu cinema evolved in the 1970s, leading to the closure of Vijaya-Vahini Studios, Nagi Reddi shifted his focus to healthcare, founding Vijaya Hospital and Vijaya Health Centre.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, a prestigious award, the Nagi Reddi Memorial Award, was instituted on the occasion of his 100th birth year. This award aimed to honor outstanding achievements in family entertainment in both Telugu and Tamil cinema, underscoring Nagi Reddi’s enduring legacy and commitment to the cinematic arts.
